At Club Champagne, safety has always been a top priority.
But following the speedboat accident that injured 16 passengers, added precautions are more important than ever. Early in January this year, a speedboat carrying 26 Chinese tourists, including 3 children, exploded off the island of Phi Phi, resulting in 14 tourists and 2 crew members with serious injuries. 6 out of the 16 suffered severe burns. What was supposed to be a fun excursion turned out to be a disaster. King Poseidon 959 picked up the Chinese tourists from Phuket for a Phi Phi island tour early Sunday morning. On board with them is 1 tour guide and 4 Thai crew. The cause of the explosion was brought on by a fuel leak that the crew noticed while the boat passed the Viking cave on Phi Phi Le in the Muang district. When the cover of one of the 3 engines was opened, an explosion followed. In a matter of seconds, the vessel was engulfed by fire. As the boat sank, passengers dove into the water. The injured parties were sent to hospitals in Phuket and Krabi. According to a local disaster mitigation official, it could take about a week to retrieve whatever was left of the boat and for an investigation to be conducted to determine the real cause of the explosion. Following interviews with the crew, it was discovered that a spark caused an explosion and set the engine on fire.Deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police Office Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen said that when the boat was about to leave the Pileh bay off Phi Phi Le at about 11:30am, boat captain Kriangkrai Boonsri smelled fuel so he slowed down the boat and went to check the engine area.
He discovered a leak coming from a fuel tank that was leaking from the stern into the middle of the boat. He shut the tank’s valve to examine the leak more closely. It was then a spark caused an explosion. According to hospital staff in Phi Phi, 9 of the injured people they treated have been discharged but the 7 with severe condition have been sent for further treatment to hospitals in Phuket. The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) initiated an emergency plan to help injured Chinese nationals, the Xinhua news agency reported. The agency urged local hospitals to do everything they can in treating the injured.CNTA head Li Jinzao also said that he’s asked the Thai police to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident as quickly as possible. Apple Tours, which chartered the boat, said that injured passengers will be compensated. According to the company representative Manassanan Mahima, “We will take care of the victims…In the event of death, the compensation is 1 million baht.” Injured individuals are eligible for up to 500,000 baht, which will be compensated from insurance. Despite the significant amount of compensation, it would have been better if the accident was completely avoided in the first place.
Club Champagne will never allow a boat to leave the dock without a thorough inspection. If there is even a small sign of a problem, we will find solutions to ensure the safety of our passengers and crew.
