Most tourists may draw a blank look when asked about where the Koh Khai Islands are located. It’s not actually surprising because Phuket is the more popular choice of many and some people may wonder why look for another island when it’s already beautiful there.
Well, those who want to have a bit of privacy and skip the crowds will enjoy Koh Khai to the fullest. Where is it? This group of islands is just actually thirty minutes from Phuket, situated in the east coast, in Phang Nga Bay. Phuket boat tours are ready to take any tourist to this hidden gem. As much as we’d like to keep it hidden, those who are longing for a bit of peace and quiet on a tranquil island will seek it no matter what.
You can board a speedboat Phuket from any marina and while waiting for the start of the trip, can watch previews of Krabi boat tours, Koh Samui speedboat tours and others from large TVs. Aside from TV watching, you can also enjoy a cup of coffee with cookies while taking in the breeze. Candies, chocolates and many other souvenirs abound in the area so you won’t be limited with choice on what to bring to your Koh Khai tour.
The usual time to get to Koh Khai islands is only thirty minutes provided that the weather is calm with only mild winds blowing. However, it can take up to forty five or even an hour when the weather is patchy. The Thailand speedboat will head southeast on Sapan Bay and the first to greet tourists like you is the Rang Yai Island located on the north side. A little bit after that, you can get a glimpse of Koh Khai Nok (also called Egg Island), and Koh Khai Nui is just around the corner which has to be skirted around for this smaller neighbouring island. You have a choice of getting there on the way back or make the detour right away.
Once you spot a small island that’s shaped like a football pitch, you’ll know that you are nearing Koh Khai already. Upon reaching the island, you will be greeted with many different schools of fish which are not afraid to be near humans. Photos of tourists swimming through them are common, and paired with the deep blue waters, it’s a wonderful sight to behold.
Since Thailand is known for its sandy white beaches, Koh Khai is no exception with some rocky headlands far off the shore. There are also parasols a bit farther on the north, all the more making afternoons perfect for relaxation.
Although small in size, Koh Khai makes up for it with its various offerings. In the center island are different restaurants and interconnecting stalls. They offer souvenir shirts, handicrafts, sarongs and many other interesting items. Aside from getting some shade from the sun, this part gives off a bazaar like atmosphere that makes your Phuket boat tours all the more exciting.
